Evolutionary biomechanics: hard tissues and soft evidence?

چکیده

Biomechanical modelling is a powerful tool for quantifying the evolution of functional performance in extinct animals to understand key anatomical innovations and selective pressures driving major evolutionary radiations. However, fossil record composed predominantly hard parts, forcing palaeontologists reconstruct soft tissue properties such models. Rarely are these reconstruction approaches validated on extant animals, despite being highly determinant performance. The extent which reconstructions biomechanical models accurately predict quantitative or even qualitative patterns macroevolutionary studies therefore unknown. Here, we modelled masticatory system rodents objectively test ability current muscle methods correctly identify differences between morphotypes. Baseline generated using measured yielded proportions, bite force, bone stress expected sciuromorph, myomorph, hystricomorph rodents. predictions from typically used varied widely high levels accuracy failure capture relative Our novel experiment emphasizes that reconstructing taxa radiation challenging methods. Future should incorporate systematic assessments error into their hypothesis testing and, moreover, seek expand primary datasets better inform studies.

Biomechanics and Modeling of Skeletal Soft Tissues

1.1 Articular cartilage Articular cartilage is a specialized connective tissue that covers the ends of the bones in the diarthrodial joints. The thickness of human articular cartilage is typically between 1-6 mm. The main functions of articular cartilage are to dissipate and distribute contact stresses during joint loading, and to provide almost frictionless articulation in diarthrodial joints....

Hard evidence on soft skills.

This paper summarizes recent evidence on what achievement tests measure; how achievement tests relate to other measures of "cognitive ability" like IQ and grades; the important skills that achievement tests miss or mismeasure, and how much these skills matter in life. Achievement tests miss, or perhaps more accurately, do not adequately capture, soft skills-personality traits, goals, motivation...

Laser Treatment of Oral Hard and Soft Tissues

The usefulness of lasers for oral hardand softtissue procedures has been reported by several Authors. The main clinical advantages are represented by minimal patient discomfort and good recovery, with decreased or absent post-operative pain. Recently a number of cases have been described in the literature concerning the advantages of using lasers for the management of osteonecrosis of the jaws ...

Evaluation of mandibular hard and soft tissues in cleft patients

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare the mandibular hard and soft tissue measurements of unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate patients with non-cleft individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study sample comprised of lateral cephalograms of 45 subjects. Sample included 15 non-cleft (NC), 15 unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and 15 bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) case...

Soft and Hard Qcd *

I review various theoretical questions that arise from data from HERA and the Tevatron, and which are relevant for the LHC. They range from soft physics, such as the total cross section, to hard physics, such as Higgs production. In particular, I argue that the proton's gluon density is somewhat larger at small x than is currently accepted.
